Communication is a key driver for change. Recognizing that successful quality improvement is done with a team, and that a desire to provide great patient care is something that doesn’t happen in a silo, the Island Health Physician Quality Improvement (PQI) team worked with partners and PQI alums to develop two team-based action series aimed at improving the experience of clinical teams for better patient care.
What is an Action Series?
An Action Series is a learning opportunity for small interdisciplinary teams. It consists of five theme-based video modules and activity guides with fun, practical activities that can be completed together or asynchronously, enabling the teams to translate theory into practice. Emphasis is on team building, communication, and collaboration to effect change and identify opportunities for improvement.
Good Call Action Series: A Multidisciplinary Opportunity to Be the Change
Island Health’s Physician Quality Improvement and Strategic Continuous Quality Improvement teams partnered on several engagement activities with Medical Staff, Nurses, Support Staff, and Allied Health team members to explore the factors that influence the interdisciplinary experience of making, receiving, and responding to calls about patient care. An Action Series model was chosen to create an opportunity for local-level quality improvement on the call experience.
The Good Call Action Series content was designed locally with our context in mind by over 40 people from 21 different work areas across Island Health, with Rural and Urban representation. Over five modules, teams explore the impact of systems and human factor thinking, understand team roles, use tools to support communication in clinical scenarios and team communications, identify and implement high impact-low effort processes to enhance the experience of making, receiving and responding to calls about patient care, and explore how the team will continue to lead change for improvement in their area.

Well-Planned Action Series
The Well Planned Action Series a learning opportunity for small multidisciplinary teams. It consists of five theme-based video modules and activity guides that can be completed asynchronously or together. It was created locally by physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, and support staff from across the Island Health region to support teams to improve the experience of people creating, clarifying, and communicating medical goals for discharge. Each area has unique challenges and the best people to identify opportunities for improvement are the ones who are doing the work.
Many factors influence the ability of all team members (including patient/family) to be aware of a patient’s medical goals for discharge. The Well Planned Action Series will support teams to explore which factors affect them and help identify high impact-low effort ideas for improvement they want to test in their area.
