Health Authority Medical Advisory Committee (HAMAC)
HAMAC provides advice to the Island Health Board of Directors and the CEO on:
- Provision of medical care within the facilities and programs
- Monitoring quality and effectiveness of medical care provided within the facilities and programs
- Medical staff human resource planning
- Overseeing continuing education of the members of the medical staff
- Planning goals for meeting the medical care needs of the population being served
- Monitoring a availability and adequacy of resources to provide appropriate patient care

Medical Planning and Credentials Committee (MPCC)

Legislative Committee (LC)
LC provides advice on:
- Development, implementation, monitoring and revision of the VIHA Medical Staff Rules and Policies
- Review and renewal of the Rules to reflect changes in the clinical-practice environment
- Review of legislation on the quality of medical care and/or the performance of Medical Staff
- Embedding the organizational culture within the Rules, including commitments to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Cultural Safety
Local Medical Advisory Committees (LMACs)
LMACs provide advice on:
- Initial review of requests for Privileges at the site or sites within its jurisdictions
- Recruitment recommendations
- Site operations
- Medical staff occupational health and safety
- Quality improvement and assurance
Medical and Education Resource Committee (MERC)
The Medical and Education Resource Committee (MERC) Providers advice on:
- Identification and prioritization of learning needs, including rural community, Indigenous Health and cultural learning
- The planning, promotion, and coordination of continuing educational activities and informal learning opportunities, including Department-level tracking and evaluation
- Translation of provider quality assurance challenges into educational opportunities through the endorsement of evidence based and best practice learning
- Educational content on the Medical Staff website and Island Health Libraries
- Access to interdisciplinary educational opportunities, and learning opportunities through provincial initiatives
- Coordinated and focused learning opportunities for Medical Staff
- Medical Staff onboarding process and implementation
- Learning through an equity diversity and inclusion lens

Clinical Governance Improvement Initiative:
A new page focused around the The Clinical Governance Improvement Initiative (CGII) which was launched in the fall of 2021. Improving clinical governance improves clinical outcomes for patients, families and care teams. The CGII Team has been listening to Island Health care teams, and they are proud to be taking meaningful steps towards clear, simple, and transparent clinical governance and accountability.
