The Island Health Culture Conference offers medical staff foundational knowledge of psychological safety in the workplace, practical strategies, resources, and tools to help address and improve psychological safety.
The need for psychological safety learning supports, identified in the Doctors of BC Health Authority Engagement surveys, led to the creation of this event, which supports medical staff to feel confident taking interpersonal risks—such as sharing ideas, asking questions, acknowledging mistakes, or challenging existing practices—without fear of rejection, humiliation, or punitive consequences.
Fostering an environment where staff feel respected and safe supports learning, diversity, inclusion, innovation, collaboration and overall performance while strengthening medical staff well-being and improving medical staff retention.
There will be pre-conference activities planned throughout the Island in 2026 leading up to the 2027 Culture Conference taking place in Nanaimo (with virtual attendee options) on April 15, 2027.

In looking ahead to Culture Conference 2027, several pre-conference activities will take place in the fall of 2026 and winter of 2027. Dates, times and topics will be shared as they become available.
Culture to Community gatherings are one element of a broader psychological safety toolkit. Resources and supports selected by Medical Staff are currently in development and will be added to the Culture Conference webpage soon.

With a variety of guest speakers, interactive activities and plenty of time to connect with colleagues and share your personal experiences, this engaging day invites medical leaders to transform workplace culture.
