Medical Staff HR Planning and Governance comprises three key teams: Medical Staff HR Planning, Medical Staff Governance, and Medical Staff Data. Together, these teams enhance the effectiveness of medical staff across Island Health.
- Medical Staff HR Planning: Provides expert guidance in developing and implementing workforce planning strategies for medical staff.
- Medical Staff Governance: Supports the medical staff committee and department structures, ensuring alignment with Island Health leadership, the Health Authority Medical Advisory Committee (HAMAC), and compliance with relevant legislation, such as the medical staff rules and bylaws.
- Medical Staff Data: Specializes in the extraction, analysis, and use of data from the credentialing and privileging data to improve decision-making and operational efficiency.
Medical Staff HR Planning
The Workforce Consultants on the Medical Staff HR Planning team are instrumental in shaping workforce strategies for Island Health. They focus on short- and long-term planning for medical staff to ensure efficient resource allocation and workforce management. Key responsibilities include:
- Developing tools and processes to enhance medical staff workforce planning and efficiency.
- Analyzing workforce data and collaborating with stakeholders to identify challenges and refine strategies.
- Tracking key performance indicators to inform decision-making and foster continuous improvement.
- Establishing guidelines and policies for effective workforce management.
- Providing strategic recommendations to meet HR planning objectives.

Medical Staff Governance
The Medical Staff Governance team plays a vital role in supporting medical leadership and cultivating an effective governance framework for Island Health’s medical staff structure. This team includes Governance Coordinators and Assistants, who ensure compliance with regulatory standards and organizational needs.
The Governance Coordinators oversee the operations of the Health Authority Medical Advisory Committee (HAMAC) and manage critical communications between HAMAC, Island Health’s Board of Directors, and medical staff. They ensure compliance with Island Health policies and regulations. Key responsibilities include:
- Organizing and managing HAMAC and subcommittee meetings, including agenda preparation, minute-taking, and reporting.
- Supporting adherence to policies, bylaws, and relevant legislation, particularly the medical staff rules and bylaws.

Medical Staff Data
The Data Coordinators on the Medical Staff Data team take responsibility for extracting, analyzing, and reporting credentialing and privileging data. Their work supports informed decision-making and improves operational efficiency by:
- Generating recurring and ad hoc reports based on data from the Cactus database.
- Managing user access and providing support for Cactus-related tools (Cactus Web, App Central, and Committee Manager).
- Supporting the Credentialing and Privileging team with data validation, reporting, and remediation needs.
