Credentialing and Privileging

The medical staff Credentialing and Privileging team is responsible for medical staff appointments (also known as credentialing) and Island Health privileges.

Each physician, midwife, dentist and nurse practitioner must receive an appointment to the medical staff prior to Island Health practicing in our facilities or community services.   Permanent appointments to the medical staff are governed by the HAMAC Specialists Physician Recruitment Policy.

The Credentialing and Privileging team coordinates new applications for privileges, reappointment processes and changes to privileges as governed by Island Health's Medical Staff Bylaws and Medical Staff Rules.

The team is also responsible for maintaining a medical staff data base, initial systems service requests for medical staff, and conveying information on changes to medical staff privileges.

Privileges

Basic privileges are those activities or procedures which are permitted by virtue of possessing a defined set of credentials identified in the privileging dictionaries and supported by local site resources.

Privilege definitions are outlined in Section 1.4 of the Medical Staff Rules and Article 6 of the Medical Staff Bylaws.

Applying for Changes to Privileges

If you are requesting changes to your medical staff privileges, please inform a member of the Credentialing office as soon as possible. Medical staff are required to provide at least 60 days’ notice for substantial changes to privileges that potentially impact inpatient care, such as:

  • Changes to department or divisions
  • Changes to procedural privileges
  • Leaves of absence for six weeks or more (medical, educational, other)
  • Relinquishment of privileges
  • Retirement

Reappointment Process

Medical staff are required to participate in an reappointment process to confirm privileges. The reappointment package is developed provincially along with input from Department Heads and the Island Health Medical Planning & Credentialing Committee (MPCC).  The 2023 Reappointment Cycle will include all Medical Staff in Island Health, including all in the categories of Locum and Temporary. The email address for Reappointment support is MA_Reappointments@islandhealth.ca

Alert: If you have not updated your preferred email address with the Credentialing Office in the last 4 years, we ask that you email MA_Reappointments@islandhealth.ca with the correct email, providing your billing number, noting your full legal name (on college licence).
