This page offers a pre-onboarding checklist for contracted nurse practitioners and physicians who plan on working at Island Health owned and operated sites. It provides a number of required activities for physicians and nurse practitioners who are either new to the province or new to practice. The lead time for these activities can vary greatly with some of them taking months to complete, please plan accordingly.

Register with the appropriate College

Obtain Malpractice Insurance
- Family Physicians - Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) CMPA
- Nurse Practitioners - Canadian Nurses Protective Society (CNPS) CNPS, Supplemental insurance recommended Supplementary Protection
Register for BC Services Card BC Services Card and download the BC Services Card Account App. The BC Services Card provides access to government services for BC residents. The BC Services Card Account is a digital ID/app that enables secure online login to government services. Both are required.
Create a OneHealthID for their suite of identity-related products and services for healthcare providers in BC. The service enables simple, secure identity management, simplified user sign on processes, streamlined registration and enrolment, and integrated security.
Physicians obtain a Medical Service Plan (Enrolment in MSP) billing number. This is required to be able to receive payments from MSP for insured services provided to eligible patients.
Nurse Practitioners – obtain an MSP to submit encounter records through the Medical Services Plan/Health Insurance BC claims processing system Application for MSP Practitioner Number
If needed, register for WorkSafeBC, if a physician employs other persons or is a professional medical corporation they must apply, all nurse practitioners must apply.
Register for Excelleris health report delivery service Island Health Distribution of Diagnostic Results and Clinical Documents and LifeLabs. There are two pages to complete on the first link and one on the second link.
Register for Provincial Health Serves Authority CareConnect , a view only Electronic Health Record (EHR) that offers access to an integrated, provincial view of patient-centric information
Request Ministry of Health approval to access PharmaNet through PRIME [https://pharmanetenrolment.gov.bc.ca/info]. All prescriptions dispensed in a community pharmacy in BC are entered into PharmaNet.

- BC Services Card App BC Services Card. Must be set up on your computer or mobile device.
- FOR NPs ONLY:
- BCCNM Registration Number: Your unique 4 or 5-digit license number.
- PharmaNet ID: Provided by BCCNM in your registration account.
- Workplace Administrator Email: For Island Health, use: PharmaNetEnrollment@islandhealth.ca
Enrollment Process Flow
- Identity Verification: Log in to the PRIME Enrollment Portal using your BC Services Card app.
- Professional Info: Select "Individual Access" and enter your college and license details.
- Workplace Link: Enter PharmaNetEnrollment@islandhealth.ca as your PharmaNet Administrator.
- Terms of Access: Review and sign the Ministry of Health Terms of Access.
- Confirmation: Once approved, your GPID is generated and shared with Island Health to update your Cerner profile.
Enroll in the Provincial Attachment System, it provides a coordinated and seamless approach to connecting patients to a family doctor or nurse practitioners accepting new patients. Required if providing longitudinal care. Doctors of BC provides instructions and links.
