Good Call Action Series: Module 3 – Message Sent, Received and Understood

After focusing on building your team's foundation and understanding each other's roles in the last two modules, now is the time to start testing small changes. These videos and Action Period activities will guide you through trying out some change ideas using "PDSA cycles" (Plan, Do, Study, Act aka "Please Do Something, Anything") and evaluating the results through team debriefs.

By the end of Module 3, you will be able to:

  • Apply QI methodology to implement/improve* the use of SBAR tool in clinical team interactions.
  • Implement a structured debrief tool to measure effectiveness of on-call communication
  • *Teams already using SBAR may focus in improving use of SBAR tool

Let’s get you started!

Each Module contains a set of videos and an Action Period Guide. While you can do these in any order, we recommend following our “playlist” below and then completing the Action Period Guide activities with your team members.

Required Activities:

As a team, pick which change idea you wish to start with and use the worksheet to guide you through the test and debrief. We suggest starting with SBAR and trying CUS. The worksheet is your documentation for testing changes through PDSA cycles. You will need one worksheet for every change cycle.

Continue to update your broader team/unit on your progress, let them know what you have been testing and how it went. Share what you are doing early and often.
