Community Information
The Cowichan Valley is located on the unceded and traditional territories of the Quw’utsun, Malahat, Ts’uubaa-asatx, Halalt, Penelakut, Stz’uminus, Lyackson, Pauquachin, Ditidaht & Pacheedaht Peoples.
Nestled between Victoria and Nanaimo on the east coast of Vancouver Island, the Cowichan Valley offers an exceptional quality of life that is difficult to match anywhere in Canada. Known for having Canada's warmest year-round climate, the region combines spectacular natural beauty with vibrant communities, outstanding amenities, and endless opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.
Whether your ideal weekend includes hiking through old-growth forests, golfing on championship courses, boating and kayaking along the coast, mountain biking, fishing, or simply relaxing at one of the Valley's award-winning wineries, the Cowichan lifestyle offers something for everyone. The region has become a destination for its thriving farm-to-table food culture, boutique vineyards, artisan producers, farmers' markets, and exceptional local restaurants.
Families are drawn to the Cowichan Valley for its welcoming communities, safe neighbourhoods, and excellent educational opportunities. The region is home to highly regarded public schools as well as several outstanding independent schools, making it an ideal place to build both a career and a family.
The Cowichan Valley is made up of a collection of unique communities, each with its own distinct character, including Duncan, Maple Bay, Cowichan Bay, Mill Bay, Shawnigan Lake, Cobble Hill, Chemainus, Ladysmith, Crofton, and Lake Cowichan. Together, these communities serve a regional population of approximately 84,000 residents while maintaining the charm and sense of connection that make small-town living so appealing.
Despite its relaxed pace, the Valley is exceptionally well connected. Victoria is just a 45-minute drive to the south, Nanaimo is approximately 40 minutes to the north, and Mount Washington Alpine Resort is only a two-hour drive away, offering excellent skiing and snowboarding throughout the winter.
Healthcare in the region continues to grow alongside the community. The new Cowichan District Hospital, scheduled to open in early 2027, represents one of the largest healthcare investments on Vancouver Island. This state-of-the-art, 204-bed regional hospital will more than triple the size of the existing facility and will provide expanded services, modern technology, and enhanced opportunities for physicians to practise comprehensive, collaborative medicine.
For physicians seeking the ideal balance between a rewarding career and an outstanding lifestyle, the Cowichan Valley offers the rare opportunity to enjoy world-class recreation, a strong sense of community, and a thriving medical environment—all in one of Canada's most beautiful regions.
