Dr. Steve Loken has accepted the Executive Medical Director, Geo 2 position, effective October 1, 2020. In this role, Dr. Loken will serve as the EMD for Nanaimo, Oceanside and Alberni-Clayoquot regions.

Effective September 1st, 2020, Dr. David Butcher assumed the Medical Lead, Family Practice, Lady Minto Hospital role. Dr. Butcher is taking on this new role while also continuing at the Health Authority Medical Advisory Committee Chair which he has held since April 2019.
Dr. Dennis McElgunn Scholarship and Rounds Launches
Long time Victoria emergency physician Dr. Dennis McElgunn passed away earlier this year while still an active emergency medicine physician in his 45th year of providing exemplary emergency medical care. Dr. McElgunn was a loved and respected leader in Canadian emergency medicine. He began his emergency medicine career in 1975 at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton. At that time emergency shifts were covered by general practitioners. In this way, Dr. McElgunn was one of Canada's first Emergency Medicine specialists.
West Coast General Welcomes New Emergency Doctor
Dr. James Williams has joined the emergency department at West Coast General. As reported in the Ha-Shilth-Sa newspaper, Dr. Williams is a 28-year-old member of the Kwanlin Dun First Nation in Yukon. During his medical education at the University of British Columbia, he completed rural elective work in Port Alberni.

Pioneering GP Oncologist Dr. Margaret Smith Retires
Victoria General Practitioner Oncologist, Dr. Margaret Smith retired from her medical practice earlier this summer. Dr. Smith grew up in Edmonton, graduating medical school at the University of Alberta in 1976 before moving to Victoria. The blend of science and helping people drew her to a career in medicine.
