- What is the Island Health Long Service Recognition program?
-
The medical staff recognition program aligns with Island Health's service milestone recognition program for employees. This program aims to recognize medical staff service milestones at 5 years of service and in 5-year increments thereafter. For medical staff actively practicing within Island Health, service length is determined by the earliest assignment date recorded in Cactus (BC’s Credentialing and Privileging data management system). Breaks in service do not affect overall calculated service length.
Privileging categories included in length of service calculation include the following: Locums, Associate, Consulting, Temporary, Provisional, and Active.
Please note: Service milestone recognition for medical staff at Island Health commenced in 2025. To align with the organization's process, medical staff will be recognized for their service milestone in 5-year cycles. Service milestone recognition is not awarded retroactively. For example, if an individual started at Island Health in 2016, they will not be recognized in 2025 for already reaching a 5-year milestone in 2021. However, they will be recognized in 2026 once they reach their 10-year milestone.
Information for Recipients
To show our appreciation, recipients will receive a service pin, and a thank-you card mailed directly to their primary address listed in Cactus. This gesture recognizes the dedication and service of our medical staff. If you need to update your mailing address, please contact MedStaffRecognition@islandhealth.ca.
Recipients celebrating a milestone of 15-years+ will receive an invitation to select a service milestone gift.
-
No action is required. The team will reach out to eligible recipients.

5-year and 10-year recognition:
Recipients being recognized for 5 or 10 years of service will receive a thank-you card and pin at their primary address.

- How is long service calculated for medical staff at Island Health?
-
We are using each provider's earliest recorded assignment date in Cactus to calculate their length of service, without considering any service gaps. If you receive a milestone card and notice your start date is incorrect, please let us know by contacting us at: medstaffrecognition@islandhealth.ca.
