The BC College of Physicians and Surgeons has conducted a comprehensive review of psychiatry residents’ competence in completing Mental Health Act (MHA) forms. Based on their education and training, psychiatry residents will be eligible to act as MHA Director’s delegates, provided they meet the necessary criteria and complete the required health authority MHA training.
Recognizing that this represents a significant shift in practice, the change will be implemented gradually over two years to ensure proper education and preparation for both residents and faculty. The phased rollout is as follows:
- PGY5 Residents – Eligible as of January 2025, upon meeting MHA Director’s delegate criteria and completing required training.
- PGY3 & PGY4 Residents – Authorization to complete MHA forms begins July 2025.
- PGY2 Residents – Rollout planned for July 2026, following completion of required training.
- PGY1 Residents – At this time, PGY1 residents will not be included in the plan.
This phased approach ensures a smooth transition and provides adequate time to adapt to the new process. For any questions or concerns about MHA, please contact MHASupport@islandhealth.ca.
