The Department of Critical Care Medicine, Division of Intensive Care Medicine of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health) seeks Intensivists at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) in Nanaimo.
NRGH is a Regional Hospital, which provides some Tertiary Care facets (Nephrology, Critical Care, Regional Trauma Service) to the population of Central and North Island, drainage being from Duncan to Port Hardy. The population served is in excess of 500,000.
Clinical service elements provided at NRGH include the surgical disciplines of General, Plastic and Orthopaedic surgery, ENT surgery, Urology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, OMFS and Dental Surgery. We have active GIM and Hospitalist groups. Our Critical Care environment has undergone a significant revival with the expansion into a 2-floor tower, comprising 2 x 12 bed critical care units, adjacent to the OR suite.
We are currently 10 Intensivists, who provide in-house around-the-clock service to both the ICU and HAU units. As a group, we have diverse primary Specialty training, from Anesthesiology to Surgery. The requisite skillset falls within the realm of Canadian CCM subspecialty training; in addition, since we have an emerging Cardiology presence, candidates should be comfortable managing complex cardiology patients awaiting transfer to Victoria.
The Intensivists provide service within both the ICU and HAU, typically in week-long allotments. A FTE is anticipated to be 15 weeks per year, two-thirds of which are daytime service and one-third being in-house nights.
All candidates will need a Canadian (or otherwise recognized by the CPSBC) primary fellowship and subsequent approved CCM certification.
The successful candidate(s) will also provide outreach support to community and rural sites, as well as engage in virtual Intensive Care Unit (ICU) level supports to the community and rural sites, should this need arise (Telephonic consultative service). There will be a requirement to participate in QI and educational activities, e.g. M&M rounds, support and endorse resident/MSI and fellows and allied health staff learning. Fostering the growth of QA is an asset, research interests can be accommodated.
It is anticipated that the successful candidate(s) will reside in Nanaimo and, if possible, will have a cross-service appointment in their base specialty.
Our current community needs include, but are not limited to Anesthesiology, Cardiology, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine and General Surgery.
