The Medical Lead, Transfusion Medicine (TM) is a co-leadership position with operational decision-making responsibilities. In conjunction with departmental Operations Directors and Managers, the Medical Lead works proactively to enhance teamwork (including collaboration between physicians and staff), ensure safe transfusion practices and facilitate continuous quality improvement of TM services islandwide. This position reports to the Medical Director of Laboratory Medicine.

Main Responsibilities

1.    Leadership & Oversight Responsibilities
•    Co-leads activities to ensure physicians and staff work collaboratively to monitor and improve service delivery.
•    Provides medical leadership, approval and oversight for all TM clinical and technical processes, policies and procedures.
•    Provides medical oversight, guidance, and approval of TM-related test/analyzer implementation, test utilization strategies and laboratory workflow optimization. 
•    Provides medical oversight for TM Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and other equipment- and contract-planning processes.
•    Acts as a liaison with appropriate Division Heads and Chiefs of Staff on physician governance and professional practice matters.
•    Ensures alignment of TM activities and documents with national and provincial regulations and standards (e.g., CSA, CSTM, DAP).
•    Participates in, or designates a physician to participate in, all transfusion committee meetings, all TMAG meetings, and all relevant Emergency Blood Management Committee meetings.

2.    Operations & Quality
•    Implements and monitors quality management systems for TM, including emergency and disaster plans and contingency plans for blood shortages.
•    Ensures that policies, processes, and procedures related to the care and safety of transfusion recipients are developed, approved, and maintained.
•    Leads or supports investigations of PSLS, PCQO or other patient safety events relevant to transfusion practices.

3.    Change Management
•    Acts as a change management champion to engage and support physicians and staff during transformation initiatives within TM.

4.    Informatics
•    Leads initiatives that optimize technology and data utilization (e.g., EHR) in collaboration with the Health Authority’s Informatics and Quality Improvement teams.

5.    Planning
•    Assesses, anticipates, and advocates for TM resource needs—equipment, human resources, and infrastructure—within budgetary constraints and long-term service planning frameworks.
