The Chief of Staff at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital is a medical leadership position which is advisory to the Health Authority and responsible for the governance of the medical staff.  The position is an appointment by the Chief Medical Officer in consultation with the medical staff and is thus accountable to the Health Authority and responsible to the medical staff.  It is anticipated that the position will be held for a three-year term. 

Who:

  1. Must be an active practicing member of the NRGH medical staff for a minimum of 3 years.
     
  2. Prior medical leadership experience.
     
  3. Appointed by the Senior Medical administrator in consultation with the medical staff at NRGH as represented by LMAC, LQOC, and the MSA. 
  4. The appointment is anticipated to be for a three-year-term and reviewed annually, with the possibility of extension of the initial term in consultation with the CMO and the medical staff.
  5. Willing to participate in physician leadership development. Opportunities for this may including formal medical leadership courses as well as professional coaching and will be funded by Island Health.

Responsibilities:

A.  Advisory

Through engagement with the local medical community, and in coordination with the LMAC and the LQOC, advises Island Health administrative leadership, and through HAMAC, the Board, on

  1. The provision of medical care within NRGH and through programs operated by the Vancouver Island Health Authority at NRGH.
     
  2. The monitoring of the quality and effectiveness of medical care provided within NRGH and programs operated by the Vancouver Island Health Authority at NRGH including assisting in reviewing, where needed, the medical components of concerns raised by patients and members of the care team through mechanisms such as PCQO and PSLS.
     
  3. The adequacy of medical staff resources for NRGH.
     
  4. The continuing education of the members of the medical staff; and
     
  5. Planning goals for meeting the medical care needs of the population served by NRGH.

B.  Governance

The Chief of Staff will liaise directly with Department Heads, Division Heads and Section Heads to monitor and enhance medical governance within the site.

  1. Ensuring the maintenance of professional standards among members of the medical staff. 
     
  2. Enforcing medical staff bylaws, rules and policies; and
     
  3. Ensuring members of the medical staff are appropriately credentialed and privileged.

These responsibilities will be achieved through

  1. Chairing of the Local Medical Advisory Committee.
     
  2. CO-chairing of the Local Quality Operations Council.
     
  3. Engaging with divisions/departments and physicians affiliated with NRGH; and
     
  4. Working collaboratively with Island Health Administrative leadership.
