The Department of Psychiatry, Island Health, South Island, is looking for part-time General Psychiatrists to provide Perinatal Pychiatry Services.

The Perinatal Psychiatry Service operates a Clinic within the Victoria General Hospital (VGH), in close collaboration with the Department of Obstetrics  and Other Pregnancy Care Providers from Family Practice and Midwifery. It has a close working relationship with the Consultation Liaison Psychiatry Service. The patient population includes women requiring psychiatric assessment and/or treatment either during pregnancy or up to 1 -year post-partum. Pre-conception consultation is also offered to women with chronic mental health disorders, to support them in decision making and preparation for pregnancy. Care is generally provided on an outpatient basis.

In addition to direct clinical care, the service offers expert advice and consultation to other specialists, primary care providers and midwives. The psychiatrists support the team clinician in triaging referrals to ensure the prioritization of those with more urgent needs, and the re-direction of patients to alternative services where appropriate.

The majority of patient-care is provided virtually, with the option to have in-person appointments based on provider or patient preference and clinical circumstances.

Successful Psychiatrists are expected to take part in the Psychiatry Department On-Call Schedule. This service provides coverage for the Perinatal Psychiatry Service out of hours.

Island Health is part of the UBC Faculty of Medicine Island Medical Program with the opportunity for training medical students, residents and other health care professionals. Applicants are expected to apply for a clinical teaching appointment. Appointed psychiatrists are encouraged to offer electives in Perinatal Psychiatry.

Administrative duties of the position include attending clinical team meetings, participating/leading in quality improvement initiatives, and taking part in Department of Psychiatry meetings.
