The Campbell River Hospital can now handle water immersion births following departmental training and simulations last week.
Last Thursday, 26 staff and providers in the Mat/Child Department went through training and simulations; the final step before "going live" with water immersion birth at the Campbell River Hospital.
"Though our NI hospitals were built with specialized birthing tubs, which have been in place since the facility opened five years ago, Island Health did not have policies and procedures in place to offer water immersion birth," North Island Hospital Campbell River Family Physician Jennifer Kask explained. "A dedicated group of midwives, nurses and physicians have been working with Island Health to ensure this birth option can be safely offered for birthing families and staff."
Dr. Kask offered a special thanks to the Campbell River Medical Staff Engagement Initiative Society "who provided support and funding for the providers involved in research, writing policies and procedures and meetings, meetings, meetings."
