People with substance-use challenges in the Alberni Valley and West Coast will soon be able to access more recovery supports closer to home with the opening of eight new supportive recovery and stabilization beds.
Announcement event held July 31 at West Coast General Hospital
Island Health, and the Province of B.C., announced the new Inlet Recovery Home in Port Alberni. Opening later this summer, and operated by Connective, a B.C.-based non-profit, the home will offer 24-hour support for people on their recovery journey, helping them stabilize and receive care in a community-based setting.
Port Alberni continues to be among communities most deeply affected by the toxic drug crisis.
Dr. Réka Gustafson, Vice President, Population and Public Health and Chief Medical Health Officer, says the new beds are an important part of the system of care.
“We know the need for recovery services in Port Alberni is urgent, and we know that substance use and addiction are shaped by a complex mix of social, economic and biological factors," said Dr. Gustafson. “That's why we need to provide treatment and support that address the needs of the whole person — not just their health needs, but their need for connection, community and purpose. That is what Inlet Recovery Home and supportive recovery is about. It helps people build stability, strengthen life skills, reconnect with supports, and prepare for the next stage of their recovery, and result in lasting recovery."
Nina Kossenko, Co-Chair of the Port Alberni Community Action Team and a Peer Support Worker with Island Health's Substance Use Integrated Team, says Inlet Recovery Home will help offer hope for clients.
“I'd like to tell people who will one day walk through the doors of Inlet Recovery Home, we see you. We believe in you. We know your story is more than the struggles you've faced. Your community hasn't forgotten you, and it hasn't given up on you," said Kossenko.
Referrals for service
Referrals for the new beds will be coordinated through West Coast Mental Health and Substance Use and Port Alberni Mental Health and Substance Use services.
