Guidelines are evidence-based strategies for actions that allow for flexibility and clinical judgement in application. The focus of this Guideline is to support direct care staff and teams with decision making and care planning around safer suicide care.
The new Guideline addresses the screening, assessment, safety planning, and transitions in care for individuals presenting with suicide risk and/or imminent risk of harm to themselves.
- The Guideline complies with Required Organizational Practice (ROPs) as defined by Accreditation Canada.
- Development of the Guideline involved a wide review of the current evidence base, along with broad consultation across disciplines and including patient partners.
- The Guideline reflects Island Health’s commitment to Cultural Humility, Cultural Safety and Trauma Informed care.
- The MHSU CARE Network has committed to a three-year review as per policy requirements, or sooner should the evidence base and/or practice standards shift.
- Knowledge Exchange Webinars hosted by MHSU PST Educators have been scheduled for leaders and educators during May & June 2025, and June & July 2025 for all other staff.
- A pre-recorded session will also be made available through the Learning Management System – stayed tuned for updates.
The full guideline is available to read on the Intranet HERE.
