Secretariat will strengthen clinical governance

Posted on: May 30, 2023

Island Health is transforming the clinical governance structures and systems that we use to ensure, safe, high-quality patient care. CGII has heard from staff and medical staff that they need resources and support to make clinical governance successful.

Review of leading practice from other jurisdictions shows that a robust support team facilitates more efficient decision-making, more effective meetings, increases transparency and makes it easier for people to participate in governance activities.

A Clinical Governance Secretariat is being established to provide that dedicated support to new governance committees that will begin functioning in September.

The secretariat will provide support in three key areas:

1. Administration: Secretariat Leads will provide logistical support, such as helping chairs with membership and documentation management, agenda planning, and associated communications.

2. Analysis: Secretariat Leads will assist with preparing briefings, gathering background materials, and other forms of research and engagement to ensure well-informed decision making.

3. Action: The Committee Chairs and Secretariat Leads will manage decision-making processes and tracking, as well as information management including appropriate escalation or communication of decisions for action.

The Secretariat Leads will also help people learn about and navigate the new governance structure, and provide an important access point for staff and medical staff who would like to share their ideas and questions with clinical governance groups.

The Secretariat is an important part of the Clinical Governance Improvement Initiative, helping us achieve improved patient outcomes and experience. The Secretariat will be established by September, 2023, to align with the operation of new governance committees.
