A new cloud-based Patient Safety Learning System (PSLS) will be deployed across Island Health on April 1, 2025, replacing the current web-based system. Island Health will be the third health authority in BC to use this new PSLS. Northern Health has been using it since March 5, 2024, and Interior Health since November 1, 2024.
The new PSLS offers several improvements, including better functionality, new features, and an enhanced user experience.
Key Improvements
- Integration with the Provincial Patient Registry
You will now be able to identify patients using their PHN, then the system will automatically fill in the rest of their information, such as a name and date of birth. - Simpler Location Identification
Instead of filling in several different fields, you can simply begin typing the name of your area or unit, then select from the list of options. - Streamlined Account Log-in
You will now be able to log in to PSLS with your Island Health email address and the same password you use to log in to your work computer. If you’re working off site, you’ll still need to connect to the network via VPN before logging in to PSLS, to protect the confidentiality and security of electronic data and comply with Island Health’s standards for remote access. - Reporters Can Track Events
As a reporter, you'll now be able to log in and track your reports - even if you report anonymously. Login instructions, along with a variety of resources for learning to navigate the new system, will be shared on the intranet and distributed to staff closer to Go Live.
Reporting Events in the New PSLS
You’ll be able to report patient safety incidents in the new PSLS in almost the same way you do now. As before, the link to PSLS will be available on Island Health’s Reporting intranet page. Each report form in PSLS contains step-by-step instructions and pop-up help.
What Happens to the Current PSLS?
After Go Live, all new incident reports will be entered into the new PSLS. The current system will remain open for three months, so handlers can log in as usual to review and close records that were reported prior to Go Live. After three months, the current PSLS will become a secure, read-only database where the information can be reviewed and downloaded, when needed.
How PSLS Handlers Can Prepare for the Change
PSLS Handlers with open events in the current PSLS should review their outstanding events to confirm the degree of harm and to document the review activities and actions that have been completed. Once events are carefully reviewed, the event status should be changed to Finally Approved.
