National Indigenous Peoples Day

Posted on: June 7, 2023

June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada. This is an opportunity to celebrate the rich culture and diversity of Indigenous Peoples across the country.

National Indigenous Peoples Day also falls within this month on June 21. While this day was first recognized nationally in 1996, Indigenous peoples and communities have been honouring their culture and heritage for generations, traditionally in alignment with the longest day of the year.

Here at Island Health, throughout the month we will focus on celebrating and lifting up Indigenous peoples and learning more about the diverse cultures and traditions within First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities.

We would be honoured to highlight personal stories, teachings and reflections from Indigenous team members over the coming weeks. Some areas of focus may include traditional healing practices and medicines, traditional foods and/or recipes, positive experiences with the health care system, your journey to working in the health care field, cultural practices and customs, the power of ceremony, art, language, music and more.

All staff who self-identify as First Nations, Métis or Inuit and would like to share more about your culture in a Weekly news feature are invited to reach out to Heather Harper Director to the Office of the VP, Indigenous Health.

Additionally, any staff who would like to provide written submissions or photos in support of National Indigenous History Month are invited to connect with the Communications Team at communications@islandhealth.ca.

Last, but certainly not least, we would also be happy to post about any upcoming in person or virtual events that you may either be aware of or planning in celebration of National Indigenous Peoples Day. Please submit this information to communication@islandhealth.ca.
