Island Health’s Medical Staff Recruitment team has made significant progress over the past year, increasing provider recruitment by 19% from FY25-26 compared to the previous year. Since May 2025 alone, 46 physicians and 15 nurse practitioners have been recruited from the United States, helping to strengthen care across Vancouver Island. Notably, all Emergency Medicine vacancies in Victoria have now been filled, along with several long-standing and hard-to-recruit roles, including a psychiatrist position on Salt Spring Island that had been vacant for seven years and a Dental Surgeon role in Victoria vacant for five years.
Additional successes include filling multiple Anesthesia vacancies across Victoria, Duncan and Nanaimo, recruiting a Neurologist and Cardiologist couple to Nanaimo and expanding pediatric care with new Pediatricians in Campbell River, Comox and Nanaimo, as well as a Pediatric Cardiologist in Victoria. We are proud to have recruited numerous Family Medicine Physicians and Nurse Practitioners across the island, leading to increased access to community-based care and an improved patient experience.
