Cowichan District Hospital proudly hosted a celebration in honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day on Thursday, June 11. This event aimed to encourage all staff, patients, families and community members to join the festivities and recognize the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous peoples.
The event began with a song, territory acknowledgement, and welcome, followed by inspiring speeches from honoured guests. A highlight of the event was the Quw’utsun (no ‘ at the end of Quw’utsun) Tzinquaw Dance Group known for their powerful and transcendent performance styles that showcase the history and stories of the Quw'utsun peoples. The Warhawk Drumming group also shared their Southern-style drumming and view their music as the heartbeat of the land and take pride in supporting and uplifting the communities they serve.
Food was provided by an Indigenous owned and operated business, Hungry Bubbas (Facebook) offering a delicious way to connect with Indigenous culinary traditions. The event featured local Indigenous artist vendors (carving, knitting, and beading), cedar brushings, the Métis Nation provided a table filled with information and the CDHRP showcased the Indigenous informed features of the new hospital.
Set against the backdrop of the hospital’s front lawn, this celebration invited everyone to come together in a spirit of respect, learning, and community. The event warmed the hearts of those present in a meaningful way that honoured local Indigenous cultures and their invaluable contributions to the community.
