Disclosure of Unexpected Clinical Outcomes intranet page is LIVE!

When a patient is harmed, disclosure to the patient/family in an empathetic, timely, and transparent manner is the right thing to do. Island Health is committed to ensuring that the disclosure of unexpected clinical outcomes occur in a consistent and supportive manner. 

In an effort to support clinicians and leaders in the preparation and completion of empathetic disclosure with patients and families, a dedicated intranet page for Disclosure of Unexpected Clinical Outcomes is now LIVE! Here you will find valuable information surrounding disclosure including: the Threshold for Disclosure, Preparing for Disclosure (including policies and procedures), Disclosure Consult support, Supporting Clinicians after being involved in an Unexpected Clinical Outcome, as well as information on how to register for Disclosure education opportunities in 2023!

We are encouraging all staff, medical staff and leaders within Island Health to participate in the CME accredited 4-hour, online training course, Saegis Communicating Unexpected Outcomes (CUO) for Clinicians courseThe Saegis CUO for Clinicians course is offered free of charge and delivered via Zoom in two, 2-hour sessions (spaced one week apart). There are limited seats still available for January - March 2023 sessions. Do not wait—register via Learning Hub for your spot* today! 

*Please note that participants must be registered in and attend both Saegis CUO Part 1 (2 hours) & Part 2 (2 hours) for course completion. Please ensure the same cohort is selected for both Part 1 & Part 2.

By enrolling in the Saegis Communicating Unexpected Outcomes (CUO) for Clinicians course you can:

  • Improve you and your team’s transparency and communications with patients/families
  • Develop enhanced communication skills 
  • Effectively support your team, patients and families when faced with potentially difficult conversations
