On June 15th, Saanich Peninsula Hospital celebrated 50 years. The day was highlighted with a special ceremony that included the unveiling of a Land Acknowledgement plaque.
The plaque reads “It is with gratitude that we acknowledge that Saanich Peninsula Hospital resides on the traditional territory of the SENĆOŦEN and Hul'q'umi'num' speaking First Peoples who have lived as stewards of the land by upholding traditional values and understanding the importance and interconnectedness of animals, spirit, land and water within this territory.
We want to recognize the damage that has been caused by colonizers and the resulting genocide that has erased traditions and culture within the Nations.
The Saanich Peninsula Hospital commits to walking and living side by side with First Peoples of this land and to build respectful relationships, improve health care services and uphold Indigenous voices. Saanich Peninsula Hospital recognizes this is the beginning of healing and we commit to holding ourselves and the organization accountable on this journey."
Other events of the day included:
A bake sale and bazaar hosted by the Hospital Auxiliary who were also celebrating 50 years. The Saanich Peninsula Hospital and Healthcare Foundation treated everyone to a BBQ with Thrifty Foods donating the celebratory cakes.
A display of the history of SPH was available in the chapel as was the opportunity to visit the Memory Garden.
Thank you to everyone who made this special day possible!
