Cataract surgery is a high volume procedure at Island Health, requiring robust communication and collaboration amongst a myriad of interest holders. Victoria-based Ophthalmologist Dr. Hamza Khan recently teamed up with Laurel East, Island Health Surgical Quality Consultant to improve patient safety and access to cataract surgery, following an environmental scan that showed that each Island Health site had a different process and varying success in ensuring a robust response to the challenges of inter-office communications, logistics of delivery to the Island and staffing changes. Early results of their year-long project indicated reduced surgery cancellations and improved satisfaction and user-rated confidence amongst hospital staff, offices and surgeons.
