Psychiatrist, General and Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) 200-1385

Reference Number

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Psychiatrist to join our Nanaimo Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team.  As an ACT Psychiatrist, you will play a key role in providing comprehensive psychiatric care and treatment to individuals with severe mental illness (SMI), often accompanied by comorbid substance use disorders and unstable lifestyle/housing. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team delivering intensive, community-based services aimed at helping clients achieve stability, reduce hospitalizations, and enhance their quality of life.

Clinical Duties:

  •   Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, assessments, and diagnoses for clients.
  •   Prescribe and monitor psychotropic medications, adjusting treatment plans as needed.
  •   Provide ongoing medication management and psychoeducation to clients and their families.
  •   Collaborate with the ACT team to develop individualized treatment plans tailored to each client's unique needs.
  •   Offer crisis intervention and stabilization services as needed.
  •   Almost all clinical care will be provided through outreach as patients typically have difficulty attending scheduled appointments at the clinic.

Team Collaboration:

  •   Participate in daily or weekly ACT team meetings to review cases and contribute to shared decision-making.
  •   Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team that includes social workers, nurses, case managers, rehab workers, mental health support workers, etc.
  •   Provide clinical leadership and psychiatric expertise to the team to ensure high-quality care.

Community Engagement:

  •  Engage clients in their community settings, including homes, shelters, or other locations, to deliver care in the least restrictive environment possible.
  •  Support clients in accessing additional health services, housing, employment, and social support resources.
  •  Advocate for clients' rights and work to reduce stigma related to mental illness.

Documentation and Compliance:

  •   Maintain accurate and up-to-date clinical records and documentation
  •   Ensure adherence to treatment plans
  •   Remain current on best practices and participate in ongoing professional development.
