On Behalf of Dawn Thomas (Aa ap waa iik), Vice-President Indigenous Health & Rural and Remote Health and James Hanson, Vice President, Community Clinical Operations and Support Programs
Over the past several weeks wildfires created serious challenges across the Alberni Valley region. In the face of evacuations, power outages, and poor air quality, Island Health staff, volunteers, and medical staff responded with remarkable resilience and compassion. Their unwavering commitment ensured that patients, residents and clients continued to receive care and support even under difficult conditions.
This response also reflects the power of collaboration. Clinical teams, physicians, support services, logistics and administrative staff worked closely together (including with our external partners), each playing a vital role in navigating a complex and changing emergency.
Beyond direct care, staff extended their efforts into the community, coordinating outreach, communication and resource distribution to support people affected by evacuation and poor air quality. In remote areas such as Bamfield, point-of-care staff demonstrated remarkable creativity and problem-solving, sustaining essential services despite power outages and transportation challenges.
Through long hours and difficult conditions, teams showed both emotional and physical strength. This compassion, endurance and teamwork not only sustained critical health services but also provided hope and reassurance to individuals and families during moments of uncertainty and fear.
We extend heartfelt gratitude to every team member, from clinical providers to support staff, whose dedication made a profound difference in protecting and uplifting both communities and colleagues. This how we lead, through our C.A.R.E. values.
