Taking Action to Dismantle Indigenous-specific Racism

Posted on: March 16, 2022

In November 2020, Health Minister Adrian Dix released findings from an independent review into the extent of Indigenous-specific racism in BC's healthcare system.  The findings released in this report, titled In Plain Sight, showed the devastating impact Indigenous-specific racism has on health outcomes for Indigenous people in BC.

The BC College of Nurse and Midwives (BCCNM) developed in collaboration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC (CPSBC) a new practice standard in response to this report and as part of BC health profession's pledges to reduce experiences of Indigenous-specific racism and to make our health system more culturally safe for Indigenous peoples.

The Indigenous Cultural Safety, Cultural Humility and Anti-Racism Standard came into effect Feb. 25th 2022.  The BCCNM is also collaborating with CPSBC on learning resources.  All Nurses and Midwives are being asked as part of their annual BCCNM registration renewal to reflect upon their individual learning.

Island Health's Strategic Plan identifies the commitment to address racism within the organization as a key priority. Island Health acknowledges our responsibility to be part of upholding this standard and creating a culture and environment that supports person-centred health and care free from discrimination, racism and stigma.
