National Day of Mourning

Posted on: April 28, 2022

Today is a special day.  April 28th honours the memory of workers who have been killed, injured, or suffered an illness as a result of a work-related incident.  Workers and employersday of mourning_horizontal.jpg observe the day in various ways, including wearing ribbons, lighting candles, observing moments of silence. These acts of remembrance help to honour the lives lost or injured due to workplace tragedy, while also acknowledging the sacrifices of frontline and essential workers.  We ask that you Pause, Reflect and Remember those who lost their lives or suffered an injury or illness due to their work.

While we mourn our losses today, we have an opportunity to collectively renew our commitment to improve workplace health and safety.  This year Island Health will focus on the role of Joint Occupational Health & Safety (JOH&S) Committees.  They provide a forum to review and address health & safety issues and make recommendations to improve the health and well-being of employees.  In support of this, we ask that you:

  • Get to know who your JOH&S Committee is
  • Get to know where to find the meeting minutes
  • Get to know how to raise an issue to the JOH&S Committee
  • Consider joining a JOH&S Committee

Keeping one another safe allows for more workers working together to provide care.
