Collaboration drives improvements to Clinical Governance

Posted on: October 27, 2022

Thanks to the contributions of everyone who has engaged with the Clinical Governance Improvement Initiative in the past year, we are now ready to begin planning the implementation of 15 recommendations that will help us make better decisions, faster, for the benefit of staff, medical staff, patients, residents and families.

Several recommendations focus on the development and implementation of an organization-wide Clinical Services Plan (CSP) and a new Clinical Governance (CG) model that will simplify committee structures and support clarity in decision-making processes.  Other recommendations focus on ensuring equity, diversity and inclusion in the way we plan services and deliver high quality, culturally-safe care.

The recommendations (read more)  will be carefully sequenced, implemented, and evaluated over the next three years. While the recommendations are focused on the effective design and use of governance structures and practices, each ultimately strives to improve the working experience of staff and medical staff, the care experience of patients, residents, clients and families, as well as outcomes and population health.

In the weeks ahead we will be sharing more information about the recommendations, what they mean to our daily work, and the path to implementation. To learn more please check out the CGII intranet pages:

Did You Know?

A June survey of approximately 300 staff and medical staff showed strong support (90% or greater) of key actions, including opportunities to:

    • Ensure that key decisions (e.g., clinical services planning, development of standards) are informed and implemented by those with the appropriate expertise;

    • Establish a consistent Island Health-wide approach to defining and monitoring clinical standards and policies;

    • Define a clear and transparent pathway for adoption and implementation of evidence-based clinical innovation;

    • Incorporate interdisciplinary, cross-continuum and direct care perspectives in decision-making.
