With a heavy heart, Island Health announces that Dr. Robin Love is stepping down after over a decade of dedicated service as Medical Lead, Geo 2 for Palliative & End of Life Care Program at Nanaimo Regional Hospital (NRGH).
Dr. Love, a Nanaimo physician, began practising medicine in the Harbour City 26 years ago and became renown for his advocacy of palliative care. Dr. Love established a partnership between the Nanaimo Community Hospice and the palliative care unit at Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital in Nepal to teach and mentor medical staff and to pay for patients’ pain medication and nurse salaries. The program is one of several reasons why Dr. Love was recognized with an Award of Excellence in Medical Practice in May 2014 by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C for his dedication to the communities he serves.
Dr. Love identified a gap in end-of-life care and pain management and decided to pursue this, providing consulting service and establishing an in-patient palliative care program at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. Under his leadership, the unit has become a 12-bed program, with in-patient and outpatient consulting, and community house-call services.
Dr. Love is a professor at the UBC Department of Family Medicine and on the faculty of the University of Victoria Island Medical Program.
On behalf of Island Health, we thank Dr. Love for his unwavering commitment to his patients. He has made an indelible mark in the palliative care field and he will sorely missed by his colleagues.
