Dr. Mason completed my medical degree at the University of Calgary after navigating several career changes and moves prior to Medicine. Subsequently, he had the 
privilege of returning to Vancouver Island, where he completed his Family Medicine residency training at the Indigenous Training Site in Ladysmith and Nanaimo.
Randall’s love for people and curiosity/inquisitive nature drew him to a career in Medicine. He chose to pursue Family Medicine and Addiction Medicine due to the relationship-based nature of the work.
Dr. Mason was born and raised in Nanaimo on the traditional, unceded land of the Snuneymuxw First Nation as an uninvited European settler. He was fortunate to experience some of the richness of Snuneymuxw culture and teachings as a youth that have had a lasting impact on him. Randall’s interest in Indigenous specific anti-racism work and decolonization is linked to these experiences and his interest in relationship-based care.
Dr. Mason helped to start up primary care and substance use services in a variety of settings across Vancouver Island over the past nine years that would be considered novel and innovative. These services were developed in collaboration with and response to the expressed needs of the communities.
While Dr. Mason is new to leadership within Island Health, he has worked as Medical Director with AVI Health and Community Services for five years and co-chair on the board of Directors for the South Island Division of Family Practice for the past three years.
He is particularly driven by the principles of equity and justice, with a preference towards working with oppressed and marginalized populations. While he has biases and blindspots, Randall tries his best to be open and aware of his privileged social identity in his clinical and leadership work. He believes in the value of creating reciprocal relationships based on trust and authenticity across every aspect of the healthcare system.
Dr. Mason is an explorer of the Vancouver Island wilderness. Whether hiking, trail running, cycling or surfing, these outdoor activities bring him joy and balance. Whenever possible, he shares these experiences with his wife and three teenage/adult children.
Dr. Mason feels fortunate and excited to be starting in the Regional Medical Director, Addiction Medicine and Substance Use Care role with Island Health. He has great admiration for the people who previously held this role, and looks forward to working with clinical and operational leadership as they develop the Regional Addiction Medicine and Substance Use Program.
