Code Blue situations in COVID-19 positive or suspected patients/clients at RJH and VGH only | April 3

The following information is intended to outline the appropriate process and PPE use for responding to Code Blue situations in COVID-19 positive or suspected patients/clients at RJH and VGH only.

What we want you to know:

The Regional Code Blue Committee, in collaboration with the Adult Critical Care Quality Council, are developing resources specific to the Code Blue response for COVID-19 positive and suspected patients/clients. While a regional Clinical Care Guideline is in development, in the interest of getting information out to your teams now, the attached Code Blue Team Response document and  First and Second Responder PDF picture have been created. Please know that all acute hospitals across the four Island Health geographies have been considered when creating the Guideline and First and Second Responder picture. Language has, thus, been kept as generic as possible to allow for site specific differences in staff, supplies, and equipment.

What we are asking you to do:

  1. Leaders of STAFF on IN-PATIENT WARDS:
    1. Please share the attached First and Second Responder Picture with WARD STAFF. This is a resource for ward staff to follow in the case of COVID-19 suspected or positive Code Blue.

CNEs/CNLs:

  • Please circulate among your staff via email and print/laminate and post in your units.
  • Staff should read this poster and pay close attention to the roles
  • Signage should be clearly posted on each room for precautions.
  1. Leaders responsible for CODE BLUE TEAM MEMBERS (ICU RN, CCU RN, RT, ICU physician):
    1. Please share the attached CODE BLUE TEAM RESPONSE RJH/VGH process. This guide is for all CODE BLUE TEAM members to read and have available for their reference.

CNES/CNLS:

  • .Please print/laminate and have available for those who are designated CODE BLUE TEAM staff for each shift.
  • Please know your roles as CODE BLUE TEAM MEMBERS

  1. ALL RESPONDERS FOR CODE BLUE:
    1. Note: We will NOT be taking the DEFBRILLATOR/CRASH CART into the room.
  • The DEFIBRILLATOR ONLY will be taken in to the Patient Room
  • The ENTIRE CART CONTENTS will be left OUTSIDE the room, which will require a designated team member to hand items in as requested. Roles are clearly labelled and the type of PPE described.

*To be clear, the Defibrillator is the ONLY thing from the cart that goes into the room.

  • Once the COVID-19 CODE BLUE is completed, the LIFEPAK will be placed into a Yellow bag and sent to MDRD for cleaning.
  • MDRD will send a replacement Defibrillator to your until yours has been properly cleaned. This replacement may be a LifePak15, so please contact your CNE or CNL if you are on a unit where the staff use defibrillators and you did not get the training at the beginning of March.

Please read these documents closely and contact your CNE for further information.

Many thanks,

Sarah Crawford-Bohl on behalf of:
