The Medical Lead Innovation & Development is a co-leadership position with operational decision-making responsibilities. With the position’s Co-Leader, the Medical Lead works proactively with others (including patients) to enhance teamwork (including collaboration between physicians and staff) and to facilitate continuous quality improvement of care in acute care services at Comox Valley Hospital. This position reports to the Geography EMD and will collaborate directly with the site director and chief of staff at the site.
Main responsibilities of this position:
1.
Leadership: Co-leads activities to ensure physicians and staff work as a team to monitor and improve service delivery; Links with appropriate Division Heads and Chiefs of Staff to address matters of physician governance, including professional medical practice issues.
2.
Operations & Quality: Implements processes and structures to engage physicians and staff in continuous quality improvement of service delivery; Monitors team budget and performance jointly with Co-Leader, and makes course corrections when necessary; Initiates investigations of team-related PSLS and PCQO events.
3.
Change Management: Acts as change management ‘champion’ to engage and support physicians and staff through change.
4.
Informatics: Leads team activities that advance technology and data use to improve service delivery using the electronic health records (EHR) in collaboration with the Quality Systems team.
5.
Planning: Assesses, monitors and anticipates team resource needs and works with medical leaders and administrative leaders to prioritize these needs within available resources.
Specifically, this position is responsible for a range of Innovation and Development work, specific to Geography 1 (Comox Valley) which will be assigned to the incumbent on an annual basis:
1. (Year 1) Respond to local needs relating to the COVID19 pandemic until the pandemic status is lifted

Provide local leadership for Operations

Collaborate with physicians in the Medical Leadership structure
- c.
Collaborate with Island wide work streams related to the pandemic
2. (Year 2) Provide leadership and strategy to support work around Access and Flow
- Provide leadership/mentorship around local quality projects to understand barriers to care and discharge
- Act as a local expert to support Island wide teams involved in Access and Flow work
3. (Year 3) Support work around integration of care between community and acute care to improve quality of care, reduce lengths of stay and improve the patient experience.
- Work with both Family Practice physicians and specialists to better understand barriers to care and transitions of care.
- Improve communications between locations of care; care teams and physicians with a goal to improve quality and patient experience.
