What is Mentoring?
Mentoring is an informal and supportive relationship whereby a more experienced individual (the mentor) helps a less experienced individual (the mentee) to learn their job and understand its context within the organization.
A mentor can provide support to a mentee in a variety of ways, such as being available to:
- Test ideas and suggestions on
- Point to potential opportunities, provide introductions
- Provide objective advice
- Assist with specific skill improvement
- Explain policies, cultures, values
- Provide constructive feedback
- Express fears and concerns to
- Encourage goals and boost morale
- Challenge assumptions and encourage alternate thinking
