Credentialing and Privileging

The Credentialing and Privileging (C&P) team oversees the appointment (credentialing) and privileges of physicians, midwives, dentists, and nurse practitioners practicing with Island Health.

C&P manages new privilege applications, reappointment processes, and privilege changes in accordance with Island Health's Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules. Additionally, C&P maintains a medical staff database, handles initial system service requests, and communicates updates regarding medical staff privileges.

Medical Staff Appointment

Under Island Health’s Medical Staff Bylaws, all medical staff appointments must be made by the Board of Directors with advice from HAMAC. The Medical Staff Bylaws also provide criteria for appointment, specifically:

  • a license to practice and membership in the appropriate regulatory college;
  • training and experience relevant to the provider’s area of practice;
  • current liability insurance coverage in the category appropriate to their medical practice;
  • a demonstrated ability to provide quality patient care and work in a professional manner;
  • comprehensive documentation of prior experience and competence from any previous medical staff appointments

Requests for an appointment to the medical staff must be made (or confirmed) in writing by the appropriate Division Head through Credentialing_Office@islandhealth.ca. For more information on the application and application review process, please see the Application Review Guideline.

Medical Staff Reappointment

As per the Medical Staff Bylaws (4.4), medical staff members are required to have their appointment and privileges reviewed annually or as otherwise determined by the Board of Directors. In 2023/24, Island Health will be reviewing appointments and privileges of all medical staff members.

This year’s reappointment process will be conducted on a department-by-department basis. Medical staff members will receive notification via email when their department review process is beginning. Detailed information on next steps and timelines will be communicated at that time. General information and additional resources are provided below.

If you have not updated your preferred email address with the Credentialing Office in the last 4 years, please send us an email to update it, and include your billing number and full legal name (as on your college license).

General Information
  • The 2023/24 reappointment process will include all medical staff in Island Health, except those in those in in time-limited categories, such as Locum and Temporary.
  • During the review process, medical staff members’ status, site(s) and privileges will be reviewed collaboratively by medical staff leadership and Medical and Academic Affairs, and professional liability coverage and licensure or registration status with the appropriate regulatory body will be confirmed.
  • The reappointment package is developed provincially with input from Department Heads and the Island Health Medical Planning & Credentialing Committee (MPCC).
  • AppCentral is the online system medical staff use to submit appointment and reappointment applications to all BC Health Authorities.

PowerChart Access for Community Physicians

If you are working in the community (non-privileged) and only require systems access (i.e. PowerChart, PACs and eHealth Viewer) please contact CommunityEHR@islandhealth.ca for an application.

Update Your Contact Information

On January 15, 2024 the Provider and Location Registry Consolidator (PLR-C) was introduced as a replacement to Provider Data Repository (PDR). Numerous Island Health programs currently rely on PDR for provider information such as addresses, specialties, admitting and clinical privileges, and contact information.

Click here to access the PLR-C system.

The PLR-C pulls data from the following sources:

  • Cactus for admitting and clinical privileges
  • Provincial Provider and Location Registry (PLR) for clinical expertise, addresses and contact information from:
    • College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia
    • British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives
    • BC College of Oral Health Professionals
    • College of Optometrists of British Columbia
    • College of Pharmacists of British Columbia

Please use the Provider Address Form to update your contact information. Completed forms can be sent to Credentialing_Office@islandhealth.ca

More information on PLR-C can be found at the following link.
