Executive Leadership Changes for Quality & Research

Posted on: August 2, 2022

As we move forward along our Clinical Governance Improvement Initiative journey, exploring our focus on responsibility and accountability for the quality of care we provide, the critical importance of clinician dyad leadership continues to become even clearer.

While we continue to engage the organization and key partners on the Improvement Initiative, we hear more and more that we need to focus on a more clear, more simple and transparent clinical governance and accountability for Island Health. I believe it is essential now to strengthen the dyad leadership of our Quality, Safety and Improvement and Research departments – two important components of robust clinical governance.

Effective September 1, 2022, Dr. Ben Williams and Krista Allan will co-lead our Quality and Research teams through a dyad leader model.

The Quality, Safety and Improvement Department, led by Scott Fielding, will report to Krista Allan; however, overall oversight for Quality, Safety and Improvement will be provided by both Ben and Krista. The current reporting functions for Research, led by Cindy Trytten, will stay the same.

Ben's title will change to reflect the inclusion of Research in his mandate, Vice President – Medicine, Quality, Research & Chief Medical Officer.

It takes a whole team to deliver safe and effective patient care. As Island Health continues to strengthen our focus on team-based care and the critical priority of allied health professionals as members of our integrated teams, we must recognize this importance in our executive roles. This is reflected in committees such as the Nursing and Allied Health Advisory Council, which will now be reflected in Krista's title as Vice President – Quality, Research & Chief Nursing and Allied Health Officer.

I am confident the work we are undertaking to improve clinical governance and reinforce dyad leadership in Quality and Research today will enhance Island Health's organizational alignment to better position us to address 2022/23 organizational priorities and advance our 2020/2025 Strategic Framework.
