Rural CME

IN-COMMUNITY CME OPPORTUNITIES: 

The following courses can be delivered in-community or “closer to home” and supported by RCME Community Program funding. Please contact MedStaffDevelopment@islandhealth.ca for more information on coordinating these educational opportunities: 

  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)

         Cost: Varies by provider

         Island Health’s Centre for Interprofessional Clinical Simulation can deliver this course upon request.
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS)

         Cost:  ~$1,600 per participant

         This course can be coordinated for the larger rural centres. Physicians in more remote communities could travel to participate if seats are available. Island Health’s Trauma Team can deliver the course upon request.
  • Airway Interventions & Management in Emergencies (AIME)

         Cost: ~$1,200 per physician
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)

          Cost: Varies by provider

          Island Health’s Centre for Interprofessional Clinical Simulation can deliver this course upon request.

         Course Cost: Free

         Tailored activities to meet community needs.
  • Comprehensive Approaches to Rural Emergencies (CARE)       

         Course Cost: ~$24,000

         Other Costs:  Catering, Venue, Local Coordinator

         Minimum 18 participants required and maximum 24. Participants should be equal mix of physicians, nurses and first responders.
  • CASTED - the “hands-on” orthopedic courses

          CASTED-EM; CASTED-Primary Care; CASTED-Fracture Clinic; CASTED-Kids

          Minimum 15 participants required.

          Cost: ~$35,000 - $40,000

          Small group – maximum number of participants 12.

          Cost: Free
  • Hands-on Ultrasound Education (HOUSE)

          HOUSE-EM (2-day); HOUSE-OB (1-day); HOUSE-IM (1-day)

          Minimum 3 participants required

          Cost: $1,900/day/physician

       This course is tailored to meet the needs of rural and remote communities and the resources available in those communities when handling a trauma situation. Participation includes physicians and allied health care providers. Island Health’s Trauma Team can deliver the course upon request.
