There are various opportunities available—both internal and external—which can enhance your leadership journey and enable medical leaders to be involved in organization decision-making where it matters.

Island Health’s internal medical leadership development workshops cover topics nominated by our frontline medical staff leaders, are selected to enhance your skills and comfort level with the challenges of building a high performing health care system.

Island Health offers internal medical leadership development and encourages leaders and future leaders to explore external medical leadership development opportunities.

The medical leadership structure at Island Health includes over 270 medical leadership roles in governance and operations that enable medical leaders to be involved in organization decision-making where it matters. These roles are spread throughout Island Health geographies and departments.

Island Health’s Medical Staff Engagement & Development program part of Medical and Academic Affairs in alignment with organizational partners and Island Health’s corporate leadership model is developing an orientation, training and development program.  The Medical Leadership Development program includes:

Orientation to the Medical Leadership

Medical Leadership Training

  • In-classroom sessions to support:
    • Understand their roles and responsibilities as medical leaders
    • Enhance their core leadership competencies knowledge and skills
  • Any workshops within the components will be eligible for both MOC Section 1 and Mainpro+, Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits.  
  • Integration of online education opportunities

Peer Mentorship

  • Provide ongoing support structure to facilitate the establishment of a medical leadership peer network
