Welcome Dr. Stephen Head, new Medical Lead Anesthesia, RJH

Effective January 1, 2020, Dr. Stephen Head will assume the role of Medical Lead Anesthesia at Royal Jubilee Hospital. Dr. Head will continue to serve in his Co-Division Head role.

Dr. Head graduated from medical school at the University of Calgary before completing anesthesia residency at the University of BC. He then pursued fellowship training in cardiac and regional anesthesia at the University of Florida. Dr. Head chose this speciality because he was drawn to acute and critical care medicine and liked the very hands-on nature of Anesthesiology.

In Vancouver, Dr. Head worked as a staff anesthesiologist at St. Paul’s Hospital where he was active in the fields of cardiac anesthesia and regional anesthesia.  In 2008, he co-founded the regional anesthesia program at UBC and served as the Division Head of Regional Anesthesia at UBC for several years.   Dr. Head developed the first block-room based resident teaching rotation in BC, a regional anesthesia fellowship program, and was very active in the development of the clinical research program at St Paul’s Hospital.

In Victoria, Dr. Head has focused his clinical activities on cardiac anesthesia, cardiac ICU, and perioperative echocardiography. When not practicing medicine, Dr. Head can be found travelling, hiking, canoeing, camping and surfing with his wife and two sons.
