In June, Dr. Gordon Hoag concluded his term as Medical Director and Department Head of Laboratory Medicine, Pathology and Medical Genetics, positions he held for 18 years.
Under his leadership, Dr. Hoag led the lab through numerous changes including the automation line in chemistry and the Kiestra in microbiology at Royal Jubilee Hospital; creation of the island-wide disciplines for clinical pathology and the specialization model for AP; and the introduction of new tests including Trop T, BNP, flow cytometry, medical genetics and molecular testing. Dr. Hoag also worked extensively to ensure the Island Laboratory is integrated into the broader provincial laboratory system.
In addition to these accomplishments, Dr. Hoag has been involved provincially with the Shared Care Committee since 2009. In July 2011, he assumed the role of Co-chair for Doctors of BC – with his term concluding in March 2018. But thankfully, Dr. Hoag is not retiring – he will continue to work as a Medical Biochemist at Victoria General Hospital.
In every role he has been in, Dr. Hoag has brought enthusiasm, leadership and courage to work everyday. Those who have had the pleasure to work with him know that his passion and advocacy have made peoples live better.
On behalf of Island Health, thank you for everything you have done for health care in British Columbia.
- Dr. David Robertson, Acting VP, Medicine Quality and Academic Affairs
