As we move forward in our ‘new normal,’ Island Health and all B.C. health authorities are adapting our operations to manage ongoing COVID-19 pandemic planning and response, while delivering excellent care and services to the people we serve.
As part of a Provincial directive for all health authorities, I am happy to announce that Victoria Schmid has been appointed as Island Health’s Vice President of Pandemic Planning, effective immediately. In this temporary role (12-18 months), Victoria will oversee our pandemic planning and response to COVID-19, while also monitoring analytics and modelling on a provincial scale, under the leadership of the Deputy Minister of Health and Provincial Health Officer.
Throughout these past few months, I’ve been really impressed with Victoria’s leadership, coordination and support for the emergency operations team and our pandemic response. As an experienced leader in quality improvement, patient and staff safety, and infection prevention and control, this role is a natural fit for Victoria and I look forward to seeing this work continue under her guidance.
Working with her Vice President colleagues, Victoria is developing a team of key leads from across Island Health who will come together in this portfolio to continue to lead our response and preparation for the anticipated second wave of COVID-19 this fall.
To make room for this work, Victoria is temporarily stepping out of the role of Executive Director of Quality, Safety & Improvement. Dr. Ben Williams is working to replace her fairly quickly, so that we don’t lose traction in the great quality and safety work that team is doing. We will announce Victoria’s replacement on the Daily News page in the near future.
