Dr. Gordon Hoag’s term as Medical Director and Department Head for the Department of Laboratory Medicine, Pathology and Medical Genetics completed at the end of June. Dr. Hoag started as Medical Director in 2000. Over the last 18 years, he has led the lab through numerous changes including the automation line in chemistry at RJH; the Kiestra in microbiology at RJH; creation of the island-wide disciplines for clinical pathology and the specialization model for AP; and the introduction of new tests including Trop T, BNP, flow cytometry, medical genetics and molecular testing. He has worked extensively to ensure the Island Laboratory is integrated into the broader provincial laboratory system. Dr. Hoag has always been a visionary leader and Island Health is grateful for all that he has done for the department. Dr. Hoag will continue to work as a Medical Biochemists. His new office is located at VGH.
We are happy to share the news that Dr. Steve Loken is the new Medical Director and Department Head. Dr. Loken graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Archaeology (SFU) in 1992. After a short break, he completed a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences with an emphasis on evolutionary biology and comparative zoology in 1998 (University of Calgary). In 2001, he went on to medical school at the University of Calgary and finished his residency in Anatomic Pathology (University of Calgary) in 2006. Dr Loken worked as a pathologist at William Osler Health Centre in Brampton, Ontario, before moving to Nanaimo, where he has been an Anatomic Pathologist, Chief Pathologist and Medical Lead for the past ten years. In addition, Dr. Loken completed the Physician Leadership Program at Sauder School of Business (UBC) in 2015. In his spare time, his hobbies include photography, art and creative writing.
Dr. Loken is located in the Laboratory at NRGH and started his new role on July 2, 2018.
