We are extremely pleased to announce that Dr. Ramm Hering has been appointed Island Health’s first Medical Director for Addiction Medicine. This island-wide co-management role will be a key role within the Mental Health and Substance Use Program.
Dr. Hering has an impressive background well suited to this role. He completed BSc and MSc degrees at McGill University, followed by his MD at the University of Calgary and a Family Medicine Residency at Dalhousie. He then obtained a Diploma in Public Health - Health Services Management Stream and completed a Clinical Fellowship in Addiction Medicine at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, University of Toronto.
Clinically, Ramm has worked in an inner city community health center in Halifax and during the past 3 years in Victoria at the Victoria Youth Clinic, two community addictions treatment clinics and as a hospitalist on the psychiatry unit within the Royal Jubilee Hospital.
Dr. Hering has spearheaded the development of an Addiction Medicine Consult Service at Royal Jubilee, now expanding to Victoria General Hospital. He also was the driving force behind the creation of our community Rapid Access Addiction Clinic (RAAC) in Victoria. Most recently, as Primary Care Substance Use Physician Lead, Ramm has worked across the island to establish a network of physicians involved in providing treatment for individuals with Opioid Use Disorder.
Dr. Hering has been involved in research and teaching and has published several papers related to addictions treatment and has worked on provincial and national clinical Opioid practice guidelines. He is actively involved with the BC Centre for Substance Use. In addition. Ramm has lead the expansion of the provincial Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program to Victoria.
