Dr. Wilma Arruda is leaving her long term role as Island Health’s Medical Director for Child, Youth and Family - Pediatrics. Dr. Arruda has achieved numerous milestones during her time as Medical Director and her work resulted in significant improvements in pediatric care - both in hospital and community settings. This has included leading the redevelopment of the NRGH Pediatric Ward, pediatric outpatient enhancements and out-reach sub-specialty services, the development of Child and Youth Mental Health protocols for Emergency Departments, development of the Center Island Child Adolescent Psychiatry Program (CICAPP) team and the development of the Vancouver Island Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (VI SCAN) team. She has also helped lead school and community initiatives including Nanaimo’s provincially recognized John Barsby Wellness Centre.
Dr Arruda’s commitment to child and youth focused health care has been outstanding. She will continue to provide clinical services in the Nanaimo community, including her key role with the VI SCAN team.
On an interim basis, Dr. Richard Crow, Executive Medical Director for Population and Community Health will be covering the Medical Director role, with the appreciated support of the Geographic Pediatric Medical Leads.
Please join us in thanking Dr. Arruda for her leadership and many contributions to improving the care of children and youth.
