Island Health’s Department of Psychiatry, South Island, has an opportunity for a part-time Psychiatrist to join the Central Access & Rapid Engagement Services (CARES) team.

The CARES clinic provides the Victoria community with a single coordinated access point for the full continuum of adult mental health/substance abuse/psychiatric conditions. The intention of MHSU is to continue to develop the capacity of the CARES Clinic so that it can provide a better alternative to the hospital emergency department for the majority of people seeking assistance (other than those requiring admission to hospital under the mental health act).

Consultations for the CARES clinic may be provided on-site at 1119 Pembroke, or in the community accompanied by members of the Integrated Mobile Crisis Response Team (IMCRT). The successful candidate will offer clinical consultation to support decision-making of allied health professionals for patients with complex and/or urgent care needs.

The successful candidate will become a valued member of a collaborative interdisciplinary team including therapists, social workers, nurse practitioner, and nurses working together providing comprehensive recovery orientated and trauma informed care. This may include urgent consultations with the team or with clients who walk in for service for whom there is an urgent concern as well as being lightly booked to provide psychiatric consultations.   Collaborative care integrating primary care partners and working closely with family and social networks of patients is part of the clinical model.

On call responsibility is mandatory for Island Health psychiatry services.

As Island Health is part of the UBC Faculty of Medicine Island Medical Program there is opportunity for training of medical students and residents and applying for a clinical appointment is expected.

Participation in research is strongly encouraged and facilitated by Island Health.

Administrative duties of the position include, attending clinical team meetings and provide reports to the Department of Psychiatry meetings.

Remuneration
Clinical care is remunerated by Fee for Service for direct care and sessional billings. Approved indirect services and duties are remunerated by sessional billings. MOCAP for on-call work
Education, Training and Experience
  • Eligible for full licensure in Psychiatry with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC (CPSBC)
  • Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC)
  • Strong commitment to collaborative team-based interdisciplinary practice and excellent communication skills are essential.
