The Department of Psychiatry, South Island, has a locum opening for an experienced community psychiatrist with skills in shared care, stepped care, addictions treatment, in collaboration with primary care physicians and working within multidisciplinary psychotherapy orientated outpatient clinics. Working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team is essential.

The successful applicant will work half-time providing comprehensive psychiatric services with the Urgent Short Term Assessment and Treatment Clinic and half-time with the Addictions Outpatient Treatment Clinic.  

Urgent Short Term Assessment and Treatment Psychiatrist (USTAT): Psychiatric consultation and treatment of patients in an urgent, short term framework.  Consultations are done conjointly with team therapists.  Responsibilities includes psychiatric diagnosis, medication management, and case conferences, utilizing both pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy modalities.

Addiction Outpatient and Treatment program (AOT): Psychiatric consultation and treatment of patients, who are enrolled in an outpatient addiction treatment clinic.  Assessment focus primarily on psychiatric co-morbidities of patients with concurrent substance use disorders.  Consultations are generated from within the outpatient team, brought forward by trained addiction counsellors, as well as referrals from Island Health Detox and Stabilization treatment programs. 


The successful candidate will have expertise in treating people with substance use issues as well as situational and psychiatric problems. Flexibly sharing the treatment responsibility within multidisciplinary integrated teams.  As an integral part of an interdisciplinary team, you will be joining other psychiatrists and therapists to provide psychiatric expertise to support short term stabilization, individual and group psychotherapy to an outpatient population.   

Clinical Duties

  • You will be assessing and treating patients across a broad range of diagnosis including Mood, Anxiety, Adjustment, Addictions and Psychosis. Co-morbid Personality Disorders, brain injuries and other physical disorders are common.
  • Clinical documentation will be maintained in the VIHA hybrid chart consistent with current and evolving standards and policy.
  • Participation in the on-call schedule.

Administration Duties

  • Attend meetings, provide reports, and maintain medical credentials per VIHA Medical Staff Rules and VIHA policy, where appropriate. 

Teaching and Research

  • Facilitate the development of and help sustain a rich teaching and supervision atmosphere with residents and medical students as well as clinical counseling interns who train in our clinics.
  • Research interests are encouraged and engagement with other researchers in the department is supported, as are connections with VIHA Research.



Office space for assessments, office tasks, and documentation is available, computer and administrative support as part of the general service. A rich multidisciplinary environment for ongoing clinical learning.

Education, Training and Experience
  • Eligible for full license to practice psychiatry in British Columbia (CPSBC).
  • Experience and training in comprehensive psychiatry services, and skills and experience in multidisciplinary, collaborative care and stepped care models.
  • Leadership experience and training will be considered an asset.
  • Capacity and interest to build relationships with the other services/staff.
