On behalf of: Health Safety Well-being Ability Management
Health-care workers often experience work pressures that affect their psychological well-being. That’s why one of Island Health’s top priorities is to create a culture of safety and wellness for staff and medical staff.
Last fall, we introduced foundational psychological health and safety training. Participants learned about the national standards for psychological health and safety, factors that influence psychological well-being at work, psychological risk and supports in healthcare, and more.
Since the training launched, over 1950 staff have completed the training, including 490 leaders. Thank you to everyone who has completed the training and for your ongoing commitment to create psychologically safe and inclusive workplaces for everyone.
The training is optional for staff and medical staff. Non-contract leaders are required to take both part one and two of the e-learning curriculum.
“I am so thrilled that this course will be mandatory for all leaders within Island Health. From a patient safety lens, I am pleased to see the addition of 'protection from moral distress' as a component of psychological safety. I particularly enjoyed the unit on organizational culture. A phrase that stands out to me is “Culture is the organization’s immune system.” The video content was engaging, and the course took one hour to complete, making it easy to fit into my schedule. — Kaitlin Blackwood, Patient Safety Consultant
By taking this training, you will learn ways to better support your team. Psychologically safe teams are more resilient, more engaged and more likely to stay at their workplace.
Based on the National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace, the training also aligns with related Island Health policy and procedures, including the HSO Cultural Safety & Humility Standard, anti-racism, equity, diversity and inclusion.
