On April 28, we observe the National Day of Mourning and remember those who lost their lives, were injured or experienced illness due to work-related incidents. On this day, we lower our flags to half-mast in their honour. This is a moment for each of us to reaffirm our commitment to a safe and healthy workplace.
Island Health is committed to improving workplace health and safety for staff, medical staff, students and volunteers. Evidence clearly shows that workers who incorporate safety into daily workday practices have less injuries, are more engaged at work and can offer better care to the people they serve. At Island Health we are committed to expanding our resources and supports to ensure the safety, psychological well-being and wellness for all staff, medical staff, volunteers, and students.
Each time we make safe choices and follow the established safety processes and protocols, we contribute to a safer, healthier workplace for everyone. This might look like taking required safety training or reporting hazards and near-misses. We all share the responsibility of creating safer workplaces.
Here’s what you can do to support safety at work:
- If you identify a safety hazard, tell your leader and report it through the Patient Safety Learning System.
- Immediately report if you experience a workplace injury, illness, exposure, or near miss incident through the Provincial Workplace Health Contact Centre by calling 1-866-922-9464. Make sure to let your leader know about the incident so they can support you.
